GARAGE 33 GALLERY-SHELTER

GARAGE 33 GALLERY-SHELTER is an international art space for art from «conflict?», which was founded by MKUV Studio [Maria Kulikovska + Uleg Vinnichenko] and SPP [School of Political Performance]. We try to break down rigid concepts of borders: geographical, national, religious, class, gender, ethical and aesthetical. It is a democratic art space for art, which is pushed aside onto the margins and remained outside the official discourse. We lack the hierarchical symptoms, we talk on an equal level, we present the artworks by different artists – mid-career and well-known as well as emerging or underrated. It is an independent art space which is located in one of the oldest garage cooperatives in Kyiv not far from half-forgotten dendrological park – in the area from «conflict?», which needs of cultural transformation and reorganization. We dictate our own rules just based on our own observations. We ignore censorship and biased understanding of «truthful» art. It is a hybrid art space which was established for touching upon the issues, which are standing out sharply. We ask questions, we hunt for answers, we call for dialogue and discussion. It is an experimental non-binary art space for the freedom of speech of people, who were denied a voice, who lost a voice, those whose voice was taken away. We’re «uncomfortable», we’re different, and we’re other. It is a shelter for the artists Everyone has the opportunity to be honest. Everyone will be able to feel safe. It is a platform for education which creates the right conditions for studying art that helps in understanding and adequate perception of it. It is a place for presentation of a true pure act of art coming from the inside. This act of art can conflict with society or with moral norms whereby lifting much deeper hidden layers and working them out.
