EXHIBITION: DORA BENČEVIČ / WOULD IT SEEM TOO SIMPLE IF I FRAMED MY WORK MERELY AS A PRODUCT OF MY DREAMS?
OPENING: 09/07/2026, 18.00
Curator: Živa Kleindienst
At the UGM Šop, multidisciplinary artist Dora Benčevič is presented for the first time with a diverse selection of works that pay homage to the breadth of her creative interests and practices. ‘My works are the result of my existence in all its complexity. Can you see what I dream about? Do you dream in a similar way?’ asks the artist, unfolding before us the many layers of her artistic practice. She draws much of her inspiration from people, fleeting interactions, and witty coincidences, as well as from the visual impressions gathered during her many travels. Digital and original drawings in small and medium formats lead us from figurative scenes that humorously comment on everyday situations to small, delicate abstract drawings. These function as independent images, but the artist also frequently transfers them from paper to skin as tattoos. The selection also includes colourful screenprints and a larger painting in which a portrait of the artist’s emotions emerges through vibrant layers of colour, continually flowing into one another and shaping the experience of being.
Dora Benčevič (b. 2000) works across a diverse artistic practice that spans illustration, comics, drawing, animation, and other visual media, including tattooing. In 2019, she graduated from the Art Gymnasium in Koper. That same year, she created the vibrant visual identity for the Days of Poetry and Wine festival, illustrated her first mini-comic The Essence of the Artist (Esenca umetnika, Stripburger/Forum Ljubljana, 2020). Benčevič exhibits in solo and group exhibitions in Slovenia and abroad.
