PERFORMANCE: DID ANYONE ANYTIME DO ANYTHING THERE. MATEJ FRANK

The closing evening of the Sculpture Quadrennial Riga will be held with the performance of the Czech artist Matěj Frank  – “Did anyone anytime do anything there”, which will take place outside, at the NOASS art center.

Sculpture Quadrennial Riga is one of the oldest contemporary art festivals in Northern Europe, the beginnings of which can be traced back to 1972. Initially, the festival brought together artists from the Soviet Union who worked with both small-scale and large-scale sculpture. The festival takes place once every four years in Riga and currently focuses on the accessibility of art in the urban environment.

After the restoration of independence, the festival was organized by the Artists’ Union of Latvia, while in 2004, shortly after Latvia joined the European Union, the Ministry of Culture of Latvia delegated the running of the quadrennial to the organization “Art Management and Information Center” (MMIC). The creative team of the festival was led for a long time by the artist Aigars Bikše, inviting various Latvian and international curators to cooperate, while the festival was managed by the art scholar Māra Ādiņa. During this time, the festival gained recognition by inviting internationally known and recognized artists to exhibit.

Since 2016, the festival has been directed by art scholar and curator Kristiāna Kārkliņa. In 2019, the TKR team and co-curator Kristiāna Kārkliņa, together with the US artist and curator Justin Hoover, created the brand “No New Idols” (No New Idols), which works with performance art alongside sculpture, creating temporary, time-based performances, in which the emphasis is placed on ritual art practice, as well as gorgeous scenography and interdisciplinary artist collaborations.

The festival is organised by the Art Management and Information Centre in partnership with NOASS Art Centre, DOM Gallery and kuš!
