VIDEO SCREENING AND WORKSHOP: COMMONING – DIFFRACTIONS 2024
The program sequence Commoning marks the start of DIFFRACTIONS 2024, which is the Kunst Raum Mitte program for 2024 . It includes a video screening and a comic workshop that explore moments of coming together in the spatial environment of Kunst Raum Mitte and their potential to influence places and their narratives. What interpretations of a possible story emerge when a place is viewed from different perspectives, and what role does its surroundings play in this?
Commoning examines the possibilities of resistance and protest through moments of gathering and builds on an understanding of space that incorporates the neighborhood of Kunst Raum Mitte as well as the everyday aspects of the place.
The program sequence features a photo-comic workshop for young people (August 26‐29 | 10 am-1 pm, registration via link in bio) with Dina El Kaisy Friemuth, and an open-air screening (August 29 | 6:30 pm) showcasing films by Julia Charlotte Richter, Mykola Ridnyi, and Anna Zett.

Kunst Raum Mitte is the reorganization of galerie weisser elefant. Founded in 1987 in East Berlin, the municipal exhibition space was renamed Kunst Raum Mitte by the Department of Art, Culture and History in 2024 to shed new light on the gallery’s history. Curators Agnieszka Roguski and Natalie Keppler were commissioned to curate a program for the new orientation of the space. In their role as curators, they employ strategies of artistic and curatorial research to engage with the site’s structures, inviting the public into the process.
DIFFRACTIONS is the program for 2024. It explores the site as a process of the mutual interference between matter and time. On September 12, Kunst Raum Mitte will open with a group exhibition, preceded by events in the neighborhood. The research residency was awarded to Berlin-based artist Anna Zett through an open call.
